The province, that occupies a narrow area, has a marshy and irregular coast. Is rather smooth with important mountains, the Guaniguanico Mountains. The main river on the territory is the Cuyaguateje.
The traditional industry of Pinar del Rio is the elaboration of Habanos, with cultivated tobacco leaves in the region of Vuelta Abajo and that are between the best ones of the world. Other products of agriculture have a limited importance. In addition has copper mines, at the moment inactive, in the region of Matahambre.
Pinar del Rio city is the capital of this province and located in the shore of the Guamá river and on the foot of the Organos Mountains and is well-known like the city of the columns. It was founded on 1699.
Near the city is the colorful valley of Viñales. The savage of the landscape of this region provide an special attractive for the visitor. Worthy to see they are the enormous located valleys, like oasis, in the middle of the abundant vegetation. The naturalists will enjoy the Guaniguanico Mountains, of 175 km in length, a paradise for the hikers. The limestone bed of the province appears trimmed in gorgeous hills, like those of Viñales; in all the region exist grottos worked by underground rivers, in some of which submarin sport can be practiced. If you choose to submerge in salt waters, Maria la Gorda has some of the more splendid submarine scenes of the Caribbean.
In their environs, are the famous tobacco fertile valleys formed by best territories of the world for the black tobacco culture. It is an ideal place to visit some tobacco factory and to appreciate the work of the tobacco growers.
Pinar del Rio without proving the “Guayabita del Pinar” cannot be left, drink whose base is composed by rum and a very small fruit of the region, the guayabita, from which it receives name, that is produced by the farmers for its particular consumption for a long time.
