Its name comes from an slaughter that made the Indians to a group of Spaniards. Founded on 1693, it was refuge of privateering pirates.
The city of Matanzas is capital of province of the same name, is located 100 km from Havana. It is a calm capital of province and typical harbor locality that, with an slowed down rate, makes an effort to conserve the memories of its passed, mainly, its majestic mansions. Well-known as "the Athens of Cuba" and land of poets and "Cuban Venice" by its bridges offer to the visitors the image of a large city seated to the border of a calm water bay.
Its North coast forms ports and bays, and contains one of the most beautiful beaches of the world: the so called "blue beach" of Varadero. The main bath of the Greater one of the Antilles and one of most known world-wide, has waters transparent and little depth, where the swimmers enter meter to meter without the liquid crystalline covers them, while others play with the white and fine sand. All those kindness of the nature accompanies a tourist infrastructure, always developing, where the attractiveness of 23 zones of diving, nocturnal restaurants, clubs, discos, golf courses of 18 holes and hotel capacities for all the pleasures. Also are addad the nights of colors and music, shared with near 10 virgin small barren islands and bottoms with more than 40 varieties of chorales, diversity of fish, the graceful dolphins, lobsters, shrimps, crabs and 70 types of moluscos, together with the most exotic cocktails.
North half of the province is occupied by plains whereas to the south are muddy lands. The South coast includes site the historical Girón Beach.
The sugar cane and henequén (fibres) are the main cultures. Subsistence agriculture practices in addition and has something of cattle ranch. Matanzas has a tourist industry and numerous mineral water springs.
In the limits of the province appears like a forced shutdown the bridge of Bacunayagua, which offers an impressive view of the Valley of the Yumurí, surrounded by a mountainous edge of 150 meters of height and bathed by the rivers Yumurí and Bacunayagua. In that zone, the pleasant climate conjugates with an abundant vegetation and a calmed landscape.
The enviroment of the province include, in addition, Cárdenas, city of cars and horses, and first town of Cuba in using the electrical energy for the public lighting system and site where was the national flag.
In the South portion of Matanzas is located the Great Natural Park Montemar in the Zapata peninsula, one of the ecosystems better conserved of the continent, dislocated in an area of 70 thousand hectares with great extensions of forests, “manglares”, coastal bog and pasture.
