Granma is located in the region of the East of the island. Capital: Bayamo. Is the North face of the Sierra Maestra (Masterful Mountain range).The western end of the system finishes in the Cabo Cruz cape (Cross Cape) and is the lowest river basin of the Cauto river. Is the plain of the Cauto or that named “Guacanayabo”. The South zone is very rustic, culminating these mountain ranges in the Bayamesa (1,730 ms) and Martí (1,722 ms) peaks, who is the third in altitude in all the island.
The rest of the territory presents a plain topography. The steep coast towards the south by the bordering presence of mountains is low and sometimes marshy. The province takes the name of the yacht in which Fidel Castro arrived from Mexico, with 82 men, December 2th of 1956, to initiate its revolution from the mountains of Sierra Maestra. The economic activity is centered in agriculture and the cattle ranch. It emphasizes the rice production in the salt marshes of the Cautos river, the coffee, tobacco, vegetables, citruses, fruits and sugar cane. The forests of the mountains of Sierra Maestra and the fishing and other important activities like those in the main ports of Manzanillo and Niquero. Exists marble quarries and manganese mines although its industry is little developed.
