Founded on 1819 by French farmers coming from Louisiana. The name initially selected for the large city was Fernandina (by Spanish king Fernando VII) de Jagua (native name). Later, in 1881, the title of city is given, in honor to Don Jose Cienfuegos, Spaniard Commander in chief of the Island at the moments of the foundation, and which mediation facilitate its existence.
It was very damaged by a tropical storm in 1825 and soon was reconstructed reason why it is most modern and better drawn up from the great island cities.
Cienfuegos (city), located on the island South coast, about 250 km from Havana, capital of the province of Cienfuegos. The northwest of the bay is located in the border and that shares with one of the more important harbor complexes of the Caribbean. Rich of sugar, tobacco, coffee and rice. Cienfuegos is the main exporting sugar port and one of first in fishing.
The cosy waters of the Bay of Cienfuegos and the splendor of their landscape cause that the place is the suitable one to spend days. Its inhabitants are proud of their city or, at least, this one is the impression that they give by the sobrenames that receive: the Pretty City of the Sea or the Pearl of the South.
The temperature average is 26 degrees Celsius; the registered maximum temperatures in the summer oscillate between 31 and 33 Celcius degrees, but winter time is smooth by the proximity of the water masses, registering itself minimum oscillating between 18 and 21, that can arrive up to 10-13 degrees, under the influence of cold fronts, and the principles between 21 and 24.
The cultural enviroment of the province complete with the Cemetery of the Queen (only of its type in the Island) and the cemetery “Tomas Acea” (garden type), both declared national monuments.
First of them was constructed in 1830 and it constitutes a true museum of funeral art; it shows the system of interments by vertical niches in the Spanish colonial time.
Cienfuegos also has the beach of Rancho Luna (Moon Farm), owner of fine sands and waters, with a coastal platform particularly rough and populated by a numerous submarine life.
The Pearl of the South also has the Escambray Mountains, that borders the northeast of the province, a good pretext for the lovers of mountain nature.
